Short Video Doc about the pigs on Hampshire Farm Script used for narration: Gloucestershire Old Spots , commonly known as the ‘Cottage Pig’ or the ‘Orchard Pig’. This breed originated in England in the 1800s, and were imported to the United States during the 1900s. They made genetic contributions to several American breeds, especially the American Spot and the Chester White, but never became numerous in the United States, however, and were practically extinct by the 1990s. In 2015, the Gloucestershire Old Spots moved off of The Livestock Conservatory’s Critically Endangered list, and are now considered threatened or a “rare breed” Pigs are one of the first animals to be domesticated, around 9,000 years ago, and are still commonly kept animals today. There are around 2 billion domesticated pigs on Earth, over half of them are in China. According to estimates by PETA around 4 million pigs are eaten by people, around the world, every day. Pigs have bad eyesight; But, can scream at up to 180dB. They communicate constantly, even ‘signing’ while nursing. Their mother's voice is the first thing they learn to tune in to and can know their own “names” by 2 weeks of age. Gestation in pigs last for an average of 3 months, 3 weeks, and 3 days (~114days) Baby pigs are born with a single tooth, to fight their siblings, and gain access to the best nipple. A strict suckling order is established within the 1st week of life. Larger piglets are typically born earlier and get to the best nipples first, defending this position for the 3 weeks they are suckling. This is a reproductive strategy that evolved to ensure that the fittest offspring get nutrients if resources are scarce. At Hampshire Farm, all of these babies will have a chance. The baby boys will soon grow into 600lb. boars, the sows will average around 100lbs. less. Pigs are not typically aggressive animals. Only occasionally using violent displays to establish social order. Or when a mother is protecting her babies! REFERENCES: 1 Giuffra, E. J. M. H., Kijas, J. M. H., Amarger, V., Carlborg, Ö., Jeon, J.
